Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging (DIEB): a preliminary statement
August 2023
APDO has recently embarked on a process to promote diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging (DIEB) within our association and within our industry. We aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and fulfil their potential regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, marriage, civil partnership, or any other protected characteristic as defined under the UK Equality Act 2010.
Diversity is about recognising, respecting and valuing differences between individuals, and acknowledging the multiplicity of identities and issues that impact us in different ways.
Inclusion means not only eliminating all forms of discrimination against individuals or groups, especially those who are marginalised, but also actively seeking to engage and value everyone on an equal basis.
Equity means ensuring that all members receive equal access to the benefits of membership including, training, and promotional opportunities.
Belonging means creating a professional community where everyone feels welcome, appreciated and able to participate and contribute.
The APDO Board is eager to develop and implement policies that reflect these goals. Initial steps towards this process include the following commitments:
- To educate ourselves about DIEB, including listening and learning from our members, researching relevant resources and consulting with experts.
- To monitor the make-up of membership in terms of age, gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, religion or belief, and disability.
- To share information with members about opportunities to learn about DEIB and how it impacts our work and our industry.
- To take DEIB issues into considering when planning and implementing events, publications and other activities.
If you have any questions or would like to share any suggestions for APDO relating to DIEB, please contact the APDO Membership Director.
