Creating a place that feels like home

2 minute read

As the winter evenings start to draw in, now is a good time to think about creating a home that’s cosy and ready for the festive season. APDO member Jennie Smith shares her thoughts on achieving that homely feel during the colder months.

As we all spend more time indoors during the winter season, why not think about organising your home? Put away your summer clothes and sandals and store them in an airtight container until you need them again. This will create more space for your winter clothes and boots and save you time when you’re looking for something to wear.

Next, look at decluttering and organising those rooms where you and your family will be spending most time. You could do this on your own or with a friend, or why not contact an organising professional near you from APDO using our Find an organiser page.

Once you’re organised, then you can start to think about making your home inviting and comfortable for the winter. Interior designers suggest that a welcoming environment is created by layers of lighting through wall lights, floor lamps and table lamps. It’s true that, as the days get shorter, our bodies are naturally programmed to feel more comfortable with lower and warmer lighting. Candles create a beautiful cosy feel in the evening. Choose beeswax or soy candles which are a natural, sustainable and biodegradable alternative to synthetic candles which can release toxins. Also, fairy lights are great and give out a fun festive light which can be carried on all through the winter.

Ensure that your hallway is clutter-free and that, if possible, you have plenty of hooks and space for those winter coats and jackets. Put everyone’s slippers by the front door, with a place to leave outdoor shoes. You could even provide spare slippers for your guests!

Cheer yourself up through the grey months by putting family photos and cards on your mantelpiece or a shelf. Place beautiful plants or flowers in your living room to improve mood and reduce stress. After a winter walk, bring the outside in by picking up holly, ferns, conkers and pinecones to create a beautiful decoration above your fireplace or on a table.

Create cosiness in your living room by bringing in some beautiful soft throws and perhaps a thick wool rug for the floor. Also, add in a snuggly cushion and you’re all ready for the season ahead!

Above all, make the most of the next season and remember that winter is about celebrations and cosiness and creating a home that's comfortable for you and welcoming to your visitors.
