Starting the year on the right foot
2 minute read
The New Year is often seen as a fresh start, an opportunity to set intentions and embrace positive change. After the busyness of Christmas, your home might feel a little overwhelmed, and you might too! Starting the year on the right foot isn’t just about setting resolutions: it’s about creating an environment and mindset that support your goals.
From tidying up after the holidays to managing your energy levels, APDO member Sue Spencer offers practical ways to begin January feeling organised, focused and refreshed.
Clear Up After Christmas
Start the New Year by packing away the festive season. Group decorations by type as you take them down (baubles, lights, wreaths, garlands etc). While sorting, declutter anything broken, unused or not used for a few years: there’s no point storing items you don’t need. Most charity shops accept decorations and cards at this time of year, so donate anything in good condition.
Protect fragile items with tissue paper, bubble wrap or egg cartons, and store them in labelled boxes. Plastic storage containers are better than cardboard boxes as they stack easily and protect against damp or pests, especially if stored in the loft or garage.
Once the decorations are packed away, take a moment to clean the areas where they were displayed. Dust shelves, wipe surfaces and vacuum where the tree stood. Starting January with a clean and organised home sets the tone for the year ahead.
Set Yourself Up for Success Next Christmas
While packing away your decorations, take a moment to plan ahead for next year. Note down items you’d like to replace or add, such as new storage boxes, extra baubles or Christmas lights, and save the list on your phone.
To simplify decorating next year, label your boxes clearly and store them in a logical order. Consider packing decorations by when they’ll be needed: advent items like calendars and candles in one box, main decorations for December in another, and a Christmas Eve box. Keeping an inventory of what you have and where it’s stored prevents duplicate purchases and ensures no cherished items are overlooked. A little effort now will make next year’s set-up easier.
Refresh Your Room for Everyday Comfort
Once the decorations are away, take some time to reset your home. Rearrange furniture to reclaim the space the tree occupied and try out a new layout. Swap festive cushions and throws for more neutral, everyday options and add a lamp or soft lighting to make the space warm and inviting. Keeping things simple and functional will create a cosy, relaxing space for January evenings.
Make Realistic Plans for the New Year
It’s tempting to set ambitious resolutions in January, but unrealistic goals often fall by the wayside. Focus on achievable targets instead and break larger goals into small, actionable steps. For example, if you want to declutter your home, start with one area, such as a single drawer or cupboard. Taking steady steps prevents overwhelm, allows you to enjoy the results and keeps you motivated.
Reflect on how you want to spend your time and give yourself permission to say no to commitments that don’t align with your priorities. Protecting your time and energy will help you stay focused on what truly matters.
Manage Energy Levels in Winter
January’s short days and cold weather can sap your energy, but a clutter-free home can help you feel more motivated. Prioritise self-care to keep your energy levels up. Make time to rest after the busy holiday season and establish routines that help you feel energised, such as eating well, getting outside during daylight hours and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.
